Can this be used over top a pre drilled knob hole?

Yes it can. the lock itself will not cover the hole but there is an included back plate for each side that should cover a stander us knob hole.

Do you have to remove the door knob each time to replace the battery?

No there is a tool that it comes with to remove the battery cover from the inside door handle. if you let the battery die there is a type c port on the outside so you can get in or use the key. i am very happy with the lock. it is well made

Can it fit a gate that is less than one inch in thickness if i add a piece of wood to be sandwiched in the lock?
