How do i adjust to 40 inches wide? When i connect 2 polls its longer than 40 inches W. And if i only use 1 pole the end doesn' the screw to connect

You need to use both the top and bottom poles are made to push them in like the old curtain rod. Make sure that the pole goes in easily.
